Mattress Disposal & Recycling Throughout Edinburgh & Surrounds

We’ve all seen a mattress fly tipped by the roadside! Most people think these are not recyclable but times have changed.

The UK threw away more than 7m mattresses in 2017, the vast majority of which went straight to landfill. Zero Waste Scotland has estimated that if the 600,000 mattresses Scotland throws away every year were stacked on top of each other, the pile would be more than 100 times taller than Ben Nevis.

Until recently mattresses were recycled in much the same way as they were made, by hand. This was a long and costly process leading to a huge problem for landfill sites and worse the scourge of fly tipping.

But today with the help of new technology we can now recycle 100% of the steel, cotton, fibres and polyester that makes up your mattress.

Here's how:

  • the steel can be melted and reused for numerous other products.

  • recovered fabric and polyester can go back into the manufacturing process to make mattresses and filling for sofas

  • latex and foam can be chopped up for use in things like your carpet underlay

  • fabric that is worn and damaged can be cut up and used to produce green energy

Nugen are also doing their part with our commitment to our no waste to landfill were possible policy by ensuring your mattress is always disposed in the correct way.
