Over the last few weeks, NuGen has been actively involved in a series of litter picking efforts across various communities, working hard to improve the cleanliness and beauty of our streets and green spaces. However, what has truly shocked and disgusted our team is the alarming amount of vapes we’ve found discarded in bushes, on pavements, and in public areas.

These small, insignificant items have become a widespread problem, and after seeing the sheer volume of them, we felt compelled to investigate their environmental impact more deeply. What we’ve discovered is a troubling reality that needs urgent attention, and we believe it’s time to raise awareness about the unseen damage they are causing to our environment. In recent years, the use of e-cigarettes, or vapes, has become a significant part of the cultural and consumer landscape in the UK. With an estimated 3.5 million adult vapers in Britain alone, the market for vapes and e cigarettes has exploded. While they are often marketed as a less harmful alternative to traditional smoking, there are growing concerns about their environmental impact, particularly in relation to the challenges of recycling these devices. The improper disposal of vapes, their components, and the inability to effectively recycle them pose serious environmental risks in UK.

It is not necessarily difficult to remove a shed or any outbuilding yourself, but it is quite laborious and going to take a lot of time and more than one set of hands.

Before you start clear the area immediately surrounding so you have plenty of room to work without tripping hazards. Consider repurposing the materials if they are salvageable. For instance, there might be enough wood to build a bench or table.

Christmas is a magical time of year but it is also one of significant excess and unnecessary waste. If we are to get serious about tackling the climate emergency, then even the festive season shouldn’t be off limits when it comes to making changes.

Below are ten top tips on how you can make a difference this Christmas and put ‘a more sustainable future’ at the top of your wish list.

When it comes to ‘reindeer food’ avoid packets that often contain glitter and can be bad for wildlife, what’s wrong with a good old-fashioned carrot!
With gifts, think quality, not quantity. Maybe introduce shared gift and secret Santa’s to encourage everyone to buy less and to help save on unwanted items. Cut back on plastic toys or switch to those made from recycled materials, wood and so on.
Avoid plastic coated wrapping paper and try use recycled kraft paper, which is both home compostable and recyclable. Most wrapping papers can not be recycled with your household recycling.
Aim to buy cards that are made from recycled, paper and free from non-biodegradable glitter, badges and plastic wrapping. Or get crafting and make your own!
If you buy crackers again try and find some that are both recycled and recyclable and free of the unwanted plastic toys.
If you already own an artificial tree, enjoy it year after year for as long as you can. As and when you are in need of a new one, consider instead a real tree that is FSC or Soil Association approved.
Make or buy a reusable advent calendar and fill it with homemade goodies.
Try and avoid unnecessary food waste, buy what is needed. Buy your meat unwrapped from a local butcher, and your vegetables loose from a local greengrocer, farm shop or supermarkets.
When it comes to alcoholic or soft drinks, swap plastic bottles for glass or cans that can be recycled more sustainably.
At the end of it all and most importantly, ensure that you recycle and dispose of everything correctly when the fun is over. If in doubt, look online or contact your local council. Remember to donate any unwanted gifts or leftovers (if in date and unopened) to a charity shop or food bank.

Not everyone can do everything but if we can each make changes, they really do add up.

It’s that time of year again as we approach Halloween to get the decorations out and get the children prepared for some fun ��

But, when the time comes, it is a common mishap to throw the old, wrinkly pumpkins away in the rubbish bin. Adding pumpkins to your rubbish only makes them heavy and it ends up filling up space at the landfill.

So once you’ve finished scaring your neighbours with your pumpkin, here’s a few ideas to ethically dispose of them!

♻️Please remember to remove any stickers and candle wax before disposing of your pumpkin!

♻️ Why not put your pumpkin at the bottom of your garden or in a local woodland to allow wildlife to enjoy! (Please think about where you place them to ensure hedgehogs can't get to them! On a wall or in a tree.)

♻️ Cut your pumpkin into chunks and bury in soil 20 cm below ground level, this acts as a great feast for worms and bugs!

♻️ Compost your pumpkin (cut in to chunks to aid) either in your compost heap or via your council compost bin.

♻️ If you’ve kept the seeds they can be planted, why not grow your own pumpkins next year!

♻️ Turn your pumpkin in to a bird feeder, as long as the pumpkin is far enough away from the ground, this will work a treat!

A healthy landfill solution

You may be the one-in-a-million whose land is perfectly flat, but the chances are that your fields are imperfect things, given to sudden bumps and dips and not optimally designed for modern farm machinery. The dips generally stay damp and make life difficult for crops and stock alike.

Would you like to fill up those damaging dips, generally level off the field and earn some money as well? Well, you may well be able to, thanks to an ongoing problem in the civil engineering industry. Its problem, which is growing one, is what to do with the innumerable tonnes of soil, sand, gravel, stone, clay, and rock that are produced every time a housing estate, supermarket, by-pass or shopping centre is built.

In the past, it went into landfill sites. Now, with a tax on material going into those, there's a need for new sites where this inert landfill can be dumped. Which is where farmers come in, because the old chalk pits and quarries and the dips, valleys and depressions in many fields, are an ideal place to put it.

NuGen, an environmental and recycling business based in Edinburgh, is one of a small group of firms that carries out such work. It specialises in restoring problem fields, and access tracks, and will handle all of the necessary permits and certification from SEPA. Director Andrew Irvine is keen to stress that inert landfill is not at all to be confused with household or industrial waste which has to go into special landfill sites.

"Inert landfill is a Category A waste, which means that it never degrades," he says. "Its soil, brickwork, chalk, sand, concrete, stone, clay and rock. It doesn't include Category B waste like cardboard, paper, plastic, metal and trees, which should always be recycled."

The amount of inert waste produced ranges from one lorryload for a single new house to several thousand for a new supermarket. And as existing landfill sites continue to fill up, there's increasing need to find smarter ways of repurposing. In Scotland, there is expected to be a shortfall, of millions of tonnes, between the inert waste generated and the ability of existing sites to accommodate it over the next decade.

The landfill projects that companies offering this service are generally industrial-scale ones. But NuGen is focused on individual sites and are in discussions for a number of farm projects.

So what's in it for the farmer? "The main thing is that he gets a field that has 70 or 80% production and within a season it becomes 100% available. His production can increase by 20 or 30%," says Andrew. "But putting stone, sand or chalk under the topsoil can also improve drainage and raising the level of the field will often reduce the chance of flooding in low-lying fields. We can also make a level pad that he can use as a site for a new building or area of hard standing."

Which sites are suitable?

Some sites are a no-go area – a field right next to a river or a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) within an Area of Natural Beauty (AONB), for instance, might not have much chance of jumping the planning hurdles. Nor would the local authority look kindly at a field that backed on to a local park.

A field that is away from houses obviously has an advantage, as does one that has good road access. Equally, if you have a big road or housing estate happening (or about to happen) nearby that will work in your favour.

"We would encourage any farmer or landowner to contact us for a chat, which could become a site survey, which could, in turn, result in more production capacity and revenues."

Flytipping - A Scourge on Our Communities

Just a couple of days ago, we were completing some clearance work for a client and were appalled at the amount of discarded waste that had clearly been tipped on the roadside. To compound the issue, materials were tipped into the watercourse.

Now, as some of this material even had names and addresses on it(!), I’ll assume that they had indeed spent the time and effort to pay for the safe and responsible disposal of their waste. It was the guy riding in with the Stetson hat and the denim shirt that let them badly down. If this were to be pursued by the authorities, it would end up back at the door of those named in the waste, not the cowboy who tipped it. All of a sudden what seemed like a cheap solution to their problem becomes a much bigger legal problem!

So please, PLEASE don’t be shy about asking some important questions before engaging anyone to clear your waste. I understand how frustrating it is right now to just ‘get things done’; you’re at home more, there are jobs that you’ve never had time to do, your junk and waste is mounting but the public facilities are all closed. It’s difficult for us all right now to do the right thing.

Ask these questions before you pay anyone to remove your house or garden waste:

1. Can you tell me where you will dispose of my waste? Any professional, legally compliant company should know exactly how, where, and when your materials will be disposed of. At NuGen we will even send you pictures of safe disposal on request.

2. Are you licenced by SEPA ? A licence to remove and responsibly dispose of materials is only granted to those businesses who are serious about the local community and wider impact on the environment.

3. Is this your business? Everyone has to make a living, we get that. But there are too many cowboys treating our communities as the Wild West where anything goes. Fly tipping is unsightly, irresponsible, and potentially hazardous to the health and wellbeing of us all.

4. Do you have a website? If they're not prepared to put their name and reputation online - why?

5. Are you on social media; Facebook, Instagram? (check for reviews and current activity) See above

6. If something sounds too cheap to be true, it probably is! Not an open question, but you should certainly ask it of yourself. If you've looked around and the boy wearing the big hat is way cheaper then all of the questions above are even more important...

Just to be clear flytipping is the illegal dumping of waste/trash/junk onto land that has no licence to receive it. One black bag of rubbish, old tyres, unwanted furniture, electrical appliances; anyone found guilty can be issued with a fixed penalty notice of £200, a fine of up to £40,000 and/or prison. A question we’ve been asked a lot recently is ‘how can I manage the increased waste materials produced from everyone working from home?’.

We’re in strange times, that’s for sure. Before I get on to some advice, I’d like to make clear that NuGen are providing a no-contact service for Edinburgh residents and businesses throughout the Covid 19 pandemic. For our part, we have taken every reasonable precaution with masks, gloves and distancing and ask all clients at this time to adhere to health guidelines as we try to safely navigate our way through this. So, what can you do?

Firstly, keep checking the local council’s website for details on modified/reduced services. For Edinburgh it’s at B in Collection Recycling Centres

Upskill to upcycle and recycle properly.

If you don’t know already, use this time to learn about what can and cannot be recycled. Sometimes all of the different types of plastic can leave you bemused, so take the time to understand what goes where and how to safely dispose of your waste. Edinburgh council have some fairly clear guidelines here and for more detailed information have a look at Recycle For Scotland where individual items can be categorised.

New Covid 19 hygiene regimen is no reason for single-use plastic

Please do not be tempted to switch back to single use items for hygiene reasons, it will only create more unnecessary waste. While huge progress has been made (plastic bags now have 70% less plastic than 20 years ago) a plastic bag will still likely go to landfill. Try to use items like reusable bottles and cups, just be extra vigilant about washing them. Of course, during this time, items like paper tissues and disposable cleaning cloths should not be put in the recycling; they should be double-bagged and kept in a separate bag somewhere safe, then put into your general waste bin 72 hours later.

Think about your online purchases

In trying to stay home, many of us will understandably go online to make even more of our purchases. If you can, try to stick to the essentials and don’t shop online for the sake of it. This will only create more packaging waste. If you’re shopping for something new – exercise equipment or clothing or a new piece of kit to replace something you already have - can you repair, repurpose, or upcycle your old item to reduce waste and save money? Cook from fresh ingredients, rather than takeaways

Not only is this healthier, it can be fun! Get the kids involved in the kitchen too – how about a maths lesson counting or weighing or timings? Not easy for everyone, I know, but there is a lot of packaging involved in takeaway food containers – some of it, like polystyrene, is most likely to reach landfill. Cooking from scratch is, by any measurement (waist included!) better for everyone.

Don’t buy in a panic!

Many of us will have seen images of empty shelves and long queues and while in recent days this has lessened it is worth remembering that stockpiling food, especially perishable items, is neither necessary nor helpful. Frozen fruit and vegetables can be nutritious, so make full use of your freezer. If you do have unwanted foods, please reach out and we will put it to good use to help other Edinburgh citizens.
